How to Choose a Whole-Home Paint Color Palette (Without Second-Guessing Every Swatch)

You find a color you love for the living room. Then you stand in the hallway, holding three more swatches, wondering whether any of them go together. Sound familiar?

The homes that feel calm and pulled together aren't usually painted one color. They follow a plan: a small set of colors that repeat and relate to each other. Here's the simple method I've used over 10+ years of working with color.

1. Start with what you can't change

Look at your floors, countertops, tile and big furniture first. Note whether they lean warm (yellow, orange, red undertones) or cool (blue, green, gray). Your paint colors should share that temperature, or the room will feel slightly off even when you can't say why.

2. Pick your design style

Your style tells you which family of colors will feel right. Coastal homes lean on soft blues and sandy neutrals. Modern farmhouse leans on sage, warm white and khaki. Mid-century modern brings in mustard, orange and walnut brown. Not sure what your style is? My Interior Design Styles Guide walks through 12 of them.

3. Build a palette of about 9 colors

Nine is enough to cover a whole home without colors fighting each other. A good mix looks like this:

  1. A main neutral for most walls and open areas

  2. A warm or soft white for trim, doors and ceilings

  3. Two or three supporting neutrals for hallways, bedrooms and bathrooms

  4. Two or three mid-tone colors for rooms that need more personality

  5. One or two deep accents for an island, a front door or a moody office

4. Repeat colors between rooms

Flow comes from repetition. If your living room accent is deep teal, let it show up again on a bathroom vanity or bedroom door. Rooms that can see each other should share at least one color.

5. Sample before you buy

Screens and printers never show paint exactly as it looks on your wall. Order samples of your shortlisted colors directly from the paint brand. Then look at them in your own light, in the morning and at night, next to your floors.

The shortcut
